What the HELL is economic security? with Brad Glosserman (18 March 2026).
On 18 March at 10:00-11:15am Canberra Time, the Canberra Security Economics Network will host a leading international voice on Asia Pacific regional security , Brad Glosserman from Pacific Forum , for a seminar and Q&A on the topic that is defining foreign and domestic economic policy globally: economic security.
What started off as a cautious reaction by governments to the use of global markets for strategic leverage — or geoeconomics — quickly became a discipline in its own right. Bureaucracies and research programs have been reorganised around it. Resilience, de-risking, strategic autonomy and strategic indispensability have become part of the lexicon.
But what exactly is the question being answered? Is economic security protectionism in disguise? Or is there a legitimate need for a new framework to jointly pursue national security and prosperity in a changed global order?
The Canberra Security Economics Network (CSEN) was formed to promote discourse around the application of economics and the social sciences to national security challenges. By holding regular meetings and showcasing the latest research, we provide an open forum to build knowledge and understanding of economic and security issues, bridging disciplinary and organisational divides.
